The development timeline

The trail ahead.

Floatbound already has a rideable prototype, an island taking shape, terrain-aware trail tools, and modular board work. The next stretch is about refinement, connected riding, and turning those systems into a complete game.

A working prototype.
A substantial trail still ahead.

These are estimates for solo development, with a single active phase. They describe the intended order and scope, rather than fixed delivery promises. Testing may change both. Completed phases mark prototype milestones, not release-ready systems. One phase is active at a time; earlier systems continue to receive fixes as needed.

The work behind the starting line.

Recent development has included playable controller iterations, multiple terrain scales, a move toward URP, terrain streaming work, global biome masks, and terrain-aware trail generation and validation. Those experiments inform the current island instead of being scheduled again as new work.

Working systems, still being proven

Creek and bank-dressing experiments, modular Compact and XR boards, material and visibility fixes, garage controls, and host/join prototypes are also underway. Existing code or an editor result does not mean a feature has passed full-game or multiplayer testing.

The remaining schedule covers trail integration, route and scenery refinement, measured performance, persistent gameplay, and testing. Multiplayer and loading reliability are the largest early uncertainties.

September 2026

Completed

Establish the riding prototype

Established the board-only game direction and an initial playable controller and camera prototype. This completed the first proof of the riding concept; handling polish continues in the current phase.

  • Core game direction

    Sep 2026

Set the focus on single-wheel trail riding, exploration, and a board without a rider character.

  • First playable foundation

    Sep 2026

Established the controller and camera foundation used for subsequent riding experiments.

Milestone reached

The initial riding prototype exists and supports continued hands-on development. This milestone does not mean final handling is finished.

02

September–October 2026

Completed

Choose the world-building direction

Completed the initial terrain-size, biome, and rendering experiments needed to choose a practical island direction. The current working layout uses 5 × 5 tiles at 512 m, with forest, meadow, and mountain regions.

  • Terrain-scale experiments

    Sep–Oct 2026

Compared multiple tiled-world sizes and narrowed the working island scale to roughly 2.56 km across.

  • Biome & rendering direction

    Oct 2026

Explored terrain streaming and biome workflows, with URP selected as the current direction for further performance work.

Milestone reached

A working island scale and biome direction have been selected. Scenery, streaming reliability, and measured performance remain later milestones.

03

Milestone reached

The initial trail and modular-board prototypes are available for continued development. Full gameplay integration and compatibility testing are still ahead.

04

October–November 2026

In development

Refine the playable riding foundation

The board is already rideable. Balance, carving, braking, reverse riding, speed feedback, camera locking, free look, and recovery have been through prototype iterations. The remaining work is making those behaviors consistent across real trails.

  • Handling refinement

    Oct–Nov 2026

Build on the current controller: tune slopes, reverse lift, pushback, tight turns, and small obstacles through repeatable riding tests.

  • Camera & input cleanup

    Nov 2026

Finish keyboard/controller consistency, swivel and free-look behavior, and predictable return to the behind-board view.

  • Exploration reliability

    Nov 2026

Regression-test the streaming fall-through fixes, spawn scale, recovery distance, and unwanted reset behavior across the full island.

Ready to move forward when

The same test routes can be ridden repeatedly on keyboard and controller without recurring terrain falls, unwanted resets, or camera failures.

05

December 2026–January 2027

Planned

Turn multiplayer prototypes into shared rides

Host/join prototype work has already started. This is the next active phase after the current riding-stability pass: prove small-group shared riding and settle the connection approach before expanding the world experience.

  • Host/join & connection approach

    Dec 2026

Build on the direct-connect prototype and settle the relay or NAT-traversal path. Separate basic connection testing from the final no-port-forwarding experience.

  • Synchronized riding

    Dec 2026–Jan 2027

Check board movement, spawning, disconnects, and terrain loading when riders travel into different parts of the island.

  • Separate-network playtests

    Jan 2027

Run small sessions over real internet connections; refine latency handling, reconnect behavior, and the session flow.

Ready to move forward when

A small group can connect from different networks, explore separate terrain areas, and recover from a disconnect without breaking the session.

06

February–March 2027

Planned

Finish the island and its trail network

The island, tiled terrain workflow, biome experiments, and terrain-aware trail tools already exist. Several map sizes and render pipelines have been tested. The current working direction is a 5 × 5 layout of 512 m tiles, with forest, meadow, and mountain regions.

  • Lock routes and regional landmarks

    Feb 2027

Build on the selected world scale and biome masks. Lock the main connections, landmarks, and route distribution instead of repeating the initial terrain experiments.

  • Refine existing trail tools

    Feb–Mar 2027

Improve island-wide spacing, mountain routes, shoreline checks, grade and corner validation. Finish the editable per-trail spline and targeted bake workflow without repainting unrelated terrain.

  • Scenery & measured performance

    Mar 2027

Continue creek carving and bank dressing, improve grass visibility and distant scenery, and profile terrain streaming, vegetation, and loading stalls in actual builds.

Ready to move forward when

The main routes connect the regions, individual trails remain editable, scenery supports riding visibility, and a representative build meets a documented frame-rate and streaming target.

07

April 2027

Planned

Finish the modular garage

Compact and XR assets, material work, modular-part controls, and customization prototypes are already part of development. This phase turns that work into a dependable in-game garage instead of treating board customization as a future start.

  • Asset & material cleanup

    Apr 2027

Preserve the supplied board proportions while checking face visibility, branding removal, grip, tire, hub, footpads, and bumpers. Verify each paint control affects the intended part.

  • Garage & saved setups

    Apr 2027

Refine the existing customization and save work into a clear interface. Check straight rails by default, optional accessories, and compatibility for each board's available parts.

  • Appearance across sessions

    Apr 2027

Verify saved setups after restarting and synchronize supported board/part/color choices when joining or reconnecting to multiplayer.

Ready to move forward when

Supported board setups can be edited, saved, reloaded, and seen correctly by another rider without missing materials or overlapping alternatives.

08

May 2027

Planned

Connect trail tools to the riding loop

Trail generation and validation have already had substantial iteration. The remaining gameplay work connects authored routes to discovery, timed attempts, clear results, and persistent personal records.

  • Trail identity & discovery

    May 2027

Connect trail names, descriptions, loop/point-to-point types, and readable start/end locations to the editable route data.

  • Timed runs & personal bests

    May 2027

Integrate and test start/finish triggers, checkpoints, run guidance, results, restarts, and saved records; verify reversed or interrupted attempts are handled clearly.

  • Local segment creation experiment

    May 2027 · optional

Evaluate recording and replaying player-created start/end segments. Optional for the first release if validation or save work threatens the core schedule.

Ready to move forward when

A rider can find a named trail, finish a valid run, retry it, and keep their record after restarting the game.

09

June–July 2027

Planned

Make a complete, testable game loop

Bring the existing systems together with menus, settings, onboarding, and a coherent solo/multiplayer flow. Small focused tests can happen earlier; this is the target for a broader, more representative closed alpha.

  • Menus, settings & first ride

    Jun 2027

Finish the play flow, input and graphics settings, pause/recovery behavior, and a short introduction that does not require developer help.

  • Wider closed alpha

    Jun–Jul 2027

Expand invites after the focused tests hold up. Check exploration, timed trails, garage persistence, and joining friends across a wider range of PCs.

  • Feedback & integration fixes

    Jul 2027

Reserve time for reproducible crashes, confusing flows, controller issues, save failures, and changes that improve a complete session.

Ready to move forward when

An unfamiliar tester can start, learn the controls, explore, complete a timed trail, customize a board, and join a friend without developer assistance.

10

August–September 2027

Planned

Prepare for Steam Early Access

Target Steam Early Access in Q3 2027, with September as the working release month. This is a focused initial release, conditional on stable riding, saves, multiplayer, and acceptable performance.

  • Broader beta & release checks

    Aug 2027

Expand testing gradually and check long sessions, varied hardware, separate-network multiplayer, and save compatibility between builds.

  • Steam page & build preparation

    Aug–Sep 2027

Finalize the initial feature scope, supported hardware, Steam store materials, build distribution, and update workflow. Prepare the store page earlier during alpha; allow time for platform review.

  • Steam Early Access target

    Sep 2027

Target September within Q3 2027. Release only if the core test criteria hold; move the date if critical issues remain. Larger online features and shared player-created content can follow later.

Ready to move forward when

Repeated tests support the published hardware target, core saves and sessions are reliable, and there are no known critical save-loss or recurring crash issues.

The testing schedule

More riders.
Better feedback.

Access expands as the build becomes ready for it. Early tests focus on a few specific questions; later tests cover the complete experience. Invitations and access details will be announced separately.

  1. November 2026

    Focused riding feedback

Small invite-only checks of handling, camera behavior, spawning, and selected routes during the current phase.

  2. January 2027

    First connected rides

Separate-network sessions after the planned multiplayer implementation pass.

  3. June–July 2027

    Closed alpha & wider feedback

Test the connected exploration, timing, garage, and multiplayer loop. Prepare Steam store materials alongside this stage.

  4. August–September 2027 · Q3

Beta & Steam Early Access target

Broader release checks in August, followed by a conditional September Steam Early Access release.

Keep the first release focused

A complete ride before a bigger feature list.

The Steam Early Access target is a connected island, satisfying board handling, small-group multiplayer, named timed trails, personal records, and supported board customization. These systems need to work together before the project grows further.

What can move the schedule?

Networking and terrain-streaming problems, performance across different PCs, save reliability, and changes that emerge from playtesting all need investigation time. Larger online sessions, global competitive systems, and broad player-content sharing are outside this initial estimate unless their scope is explicitly added later.

Development notes and gameplay captures will follow meaningful milestones. This page should be revised as real progress replaces estimates.
